Word & Outlook 2002 Problems

K

Katie2005

I have had MS Office XP (2002) installed on three (3) separate machines since
2002. In the past five (5) years I have had NO PROBLEMS with any of the
modules. Last month (Feb or March, 2007) Microsoft made some security updates
to Word and Outlook.

PROBLEM #1:

Since the security updates were downloaded and installed, when Word is
functioning as the email (default) processor for Outlook it will occasionally
lock the machine up. This happens on all three (3) machines (2 with Win XP
Home and 1 with Win XP Pro). The only alternative is to re-boot. Deleating
Winword.exe from processing does not free the machine.

PROBLEM #2:

This also began happening after installing the security updates. I have four
(4) mailboxes defined in Outlook with one default. Occasionally, when
entering a reply Outlook will use the address of the fourth (4th) mailbox as
the return address for the email rather than the default. I only have one of
the machines set up with four (4) mailboxes (the Win XP Pro system) so it
only occurs on that machine.

These issues have never occurred in five (5) years of daily usage until
Microsoft made the security updates to Word and Outlook last month.

The "wonderful folks" in India keep telling me to contact customer support
and pay for help!

THESE ARE MICROSOFT PROBLEMS AND I DO NOT INTEND TO PAY TO SOLVE THEIR
PROBLEM. I do have alternatives; Linux and Open Office to name two (2).

To say that I am frustrated only represents the current attitudes about
Microsoft and it's lack of customer concern. Do you think I will upgrade to
Vista or Office 2007? I think not!!! But, I may seriously consider the
alternatives to both if I can't get resolution of these issues.

If anyone else has experieced these issues please tell me how you resolved
them.

Ranting here about Microsoft does nothing to solve your problems. All it does is turn off potential posters who may be able to answer your questions. No one here works for Microsoft with the occasional exception of a MSFT employee who takes their own personal time to answer posts.

1. What troubleshooting have you tried? Have you tried backing out the security updates one by one until the problem goes away? If you back them all out, does the problem persist? Have you tried using Detect and Repair? System Restore to a point prior to the updates?

2. Outlook replies using the account under which the email was received. Does Outlook use your non-default account for replies on accounts that are your default?

*** OK, so I ranted. When you get mutiple emails from MS Support in India
telling you that you can pay to solve the problem (induced by MS) ranting may
not help but it does convey your frustration. Thanks for the lecture. Perhaps
MS does monitor these boards and they just might decide to fix their
problems. But, for Office 2002, I doubt it. Upgrading to Office 2003 or 2007
would be one soultion if they offered any meaningful enhancements to the
average user.

*** No, I haven't backed the updates out - yet! Nor, have I restored to a
point prior to the updates. Am I the only one experiencing these problems? I
did a search on the problem on MS's website and found that the Word/Outlook
hanging problem was first identified January 29, 2007. The soultion was to
"stop Winword.exe's execution (which doesn't resolve the hanging - the
machines are locked up. I don't enable Auto Update and only let MS Update
every month or so. Thus far by the time I do Update MS has resolved any bugs
- but evidentally not this one.
2. Outlook replies using the account under which the email was received. Does Outlook use your non-default account for replies on accounts that are your default?
**** What you say may be true in most cases. Yes, in the last instance, an
email was received in my default account mailbox and the reply used the last
email address and not the default. As I said I have not had these problems in
5 years of using Word and Outlook 2002 on 3 separate machines.

After carefully watching my reply emails over the weekend, I find that ALL
replys are being sent by Outlook 2002 with the 4th email address rather than
the default. This is much worse than I thought but at least it is consistant.
Again this never happened in 5 years of usage on 3 machines until the last
few months after MS updated both Word and Outlook for "security threats".
