Word - page problem

G

getor

For some strange reason my word documents now will only print US
formats, and not standard A4 as has been my default for a long time. I
have not changed settings...it just happened. Going in to change the
settings I am not allowed. I can see the A4 choice in grey, but am not
allowed to choose it. What can I do to get my belowed A4 format back?

PS! Strangest thing that I am guided into this Dutch Google page
without ability to choose English, but that is an entirely different
matter...

What happens if you change the printer to "Any Printer" in the page
set-up dialog before you select the paper size?

In System Preferences -> Print & Fax, what do you have for "Selected
printer in Print Dialog"? What do you have for "Default Paper Size in
Page Set-up"
(I think Word can over-ride those settings. It would be a good idea to
see if your problem stays with Word, or whether other applications
think they are printing to US Letter too.)
You might try quitting Word, hiding Word's normal template, restarting
Word, which will make a fresh one, to see if your A4 setting stays grey

If futzing with those settings don't help, post back with OS X version,
Office version, Printer model and PDD version (you will get the latter
from the printer set-up utility.

In addition to Elliott's solid suggestions, you might also try reinstalling
your printer driver. My understanding is that the paper size & other info is
simply supplied to the app by the driver software, and that drivers are as
susceptible to corruption as any other file (perhaps even more than most).

Most likely, you saved a default page size in your normal template.

Try renaming your normal template to something else and restarting Word to
see if the problem goes away. There are two concepts of a default paper
size. There is the OS concept which word respects, but only if it does not
have a default set for itself. Word never has a default set for itself
unless the user specifically sets one and it warns before allowing that to
happen. It's likely that you may have accidentally done this (if this is
indeed your problem).

Normal is located at Documents/Microsoft User Data.

Thanks,

Intrigued by this, Rob, as I have never changed the default page size
intentionally or otherwise, but are you saying that if you _do_ that it
preempts your ability to choose a different paper size for any given
document?

No, you can always choose paper sizes per document. I was thinking that you
were experiencing a problem where all new docs were defaulting to a certain
size.

Changing paper size should still be totally possible no matter what the
defaults are. If it is not, this is something you should take up with Apple
as that is their API set that is failing. The number of page size (page
format objects) that are available in the page setup dialog is determined by
the sizes available for the driver you have selected. Try changing a few
drivers and see if the sizes you want appear.

Rob.

Thanks for the clarification... I thought that should be the case.

The OP did not mention any problem with Page Setup, but that his A4
docs were defaulting to US specs when printing & that although A4, etc.
were visible in the list, they were not selectable. I took that to mean
throught the printer settings in the Print dialog, but perhaps I
misunderstood his point.
