word page view: can't resize window + blank at bottom

I fairly often get glitches when viewing Word doc's in page view mode.
What is most irritating is that I am not allowed to resize the window;
plus, there is a little blank rectangle at bottom that takes up ~1/5 of
the page. When this happens, pagination is not shown at bottom as
well. Any recommendations on whether I should e.g. trash certain files
and retry? (I trashed prefs, to little avail.) It also seems to be
related to specific doc's emailed to me, generally from Windows
machines, but not exclusively so.

Thanks,

Jim P.

Really, haven't a clue. This sounds very unfamiliar.

Exactly what version of Word and OS?

In Word | Preferences | View, make sure "status bar" is checked. That's the
thing that shows the pagination.

What precisely do you mean by "not allowed to resize"? You should be able
to grab the little diagonal lines in the bottom right corner and move them
around. What do you see, and what happens when you try this?

Might the little blank rectangle at the bottom be the footer?

By "page view", I assume you mean you go to View | Page Layout, and that's
the mode under discussion here? (just making sure)

Thanks. Most up-to-date Word 2004 and Mac OS 10.4.3. I cannot resize
when this problem happens, following the procedure you give. There is
no footer; it is dead space. I can fix it for my original Word docs by
quitting, then relaunching Word from my original docs, but when certain
Windows-based docs (?) arrive, they look like this in page view (and
yes, I mean Page Layout view).

Any ideas on e.g. prefs files to try and trash?
