In the file menu box, each time I open Word there is an
increasing list of "New Works Templates" stacked up above
the norma file menu box, and the "New Works Template"
list just keep getting longer and longer. Help

Go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and find the Works Add-in and
remove it.

If you are using Word freestanding (not starting it from the Works Task
Launcher), then you probably want to uninstall the Microsoft Works Suite
Add-in for Word, which causes a wealth of problems (including the one you
have noticed). Go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, find the add-in,
and uninstall it. This will not uninstall Works or Word, just the
troublesome add-in. Then go back to Word and open Tools | Customize. Remove
all the New Works Template menu entries from the File menu (since they will
no longer work anyway).
