Word printing funny characters

C

I installed Word 2000 on my laptop with Vista.
I have the same version on my PC with no problems.
Sometimes, in word, when I type certain characters they display wrong.
For example:
When I type @ (shift 2) i get a " (double quote)
When I type # (shift 3) i get a / (backslash)
? give me a capital E with a line above it

This doesn't happen all the time

thanks!

You have the wrong default language set for your keyboard or possibly the
wrong language set for Office.

The " and @ keys are switched in English (UK) and English (US). But this
sounds more like you have Spanish or Portuguese set.
