Word problems after SP2 upgrade

I recently installed the SP2 upgrade on Office 2004, running OSX
10.4.3, PBG4. This has fixed the problem of Word freezing after a
document was left open and idle for a long time. However, it has
introduced two new bugs:
1. Formatting palette and other toolbars freeze in their postion, i.e.
they cannot be moved. They are still partly functional, alhtough there
are some problems such as drop down lists (e.g. font size) appearing in
an entirly different location on the screen. The toolbars can be
closed and re-opened but they remain frozen in the same position. The
problem occurs mainly when two or more documents are open at the same
time. Sometimes, opening a new document will restore the palette, but
it will freeze again after a while.
2. Pasting even a small amount of text in a document takes a remarkably
long time. All other operations are normal.
Any suggestions appreciated. Maintenance tasks are performed regularly.
Thanks
George

Many thanks for the reply Daiya. I have thrown out all preferences and
the normal template and that seems to have solved most of the problems.
Pasting is still slow, but only within tables. The toolbars stopped
freezing, although one small problem remains with the standard toolbar
(I had this before sp2 anyway): I goes all blank, i.e. buttons don't
show up at all and they are restored one at a time as I pass the mouse
cursor over the toolbar (no clicking). Not a major problem though.

Hi George,

Do you have the toolbar vertical? The blank icons has been reported with up
and down toolbars but not with horizontal ones.

Glad the other things helped some.

Yes, it is vertical because I am using a wide screen so there's more
space on the sides of the page Anyway, I can live with that..

Do you have only one row of toolbar icons, George? If you want some ideas,
including, a script for hiding the toolbars, just post back.

Thanks Clive, I don't really use the standard toolbar too much, mainly
the zoom button and show/hide marks. I have just customized it to
include only the 5-6 buttons I need, made it horizontal, and placed it
on the right side of the page, above the formating palette. No problems
this way.

Fine, George. Sounds good! (Mine are minimalist, too.)

I guess you know that you are better off copying buttons from a default
toolbar on to a new toolbar, then closing (for good) the original? After
that you can use the Organizer to back up the modified toolbar. If you
create a new Normal template (a common solution to problems, as you most
probably know) you can then copy your own toolbar(s) back.

Thanks for the tip, Clive. I will do that. By the way, I downloaded
your "Bend word to your will" article a couple of days ago, seems like
a great resource!

Thanks George!

So you'll have discovered a fuller explanation under the heading 'Why is it
best not to alter the default toolbars?'. The topic under 'Transferring
toolbars and macros via the Organizer' is also relevant.

An updated version of "Bend Word to Your Will", with lots more on Word 2004,
is ready to upload will probably be up in two weeks. I'll make an
announcement at the time.

Cheers,
Clive
