WORD problems

Steven

I am new to this site, but I was advised to seek help here.

I have received this computer from Gateway. The software
is Windows 98 with Microsoft Word 2000 installed.

As of Feb. 11, I cannot use Word. I can type anything I
like, but I continue to get the same message when I try to
save my work or close Word.

Here is the message I always get:

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module CTLAO.DLL at 0187:61c05089.

I do not have any of the CD-ROMs to the software in the
computer. All the software came with it.

How can I solve this problem?

Any help would be massively appreciated. Please send your
help and hints to (e-mail address removed)

Thanks.

Have you contacted Gateway? Ask them why they did not supply the CDs. Surely
the pc, if new, is under guarantee?

I did a search on Microsoft's site as well as in Goole and the are NO sites with ANY info
on this dll: CTLAO.DLL
Right-click on that file, click on properties, then on the Version tab. Tell us what info
you get from it.

(Anyone know what it hoes to?)
Curious....

Hi Steven,

CTLAO.DLL is not a Word or Office DLL. IOW, more than likely
reinstalling Word will not resolve the issue.

See if the error occurs when you start Word using the /a switch. Go to
Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error does not occur then take a look under Tools/Templates and
Add-ins and see if there are any global templates or add-ins listed.
If so they are located in one of your Startup folders. The location of
the Word\Startup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File
Locations and the Office\Startup folder can be found in the Office
installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

I have the same problem, except that my message is that
the invalid page fault was in module SQLHBLH.DLL. This
too doesn't seem to be a MS dll.
