WORD problems

Whenever I try to open a WORD document, I need to observe
a procedure which requires me to (supposedly) exit the
word window; only then does it load the text, which turns
out often to be in a form which is locked forediting
after iit has been saved. How can either of these
unsatisfactory characteristics be corrected?
