word processor document for use in microsoft word

I've saved a word processor document (which i have on my home computer) to
disk, however when i come to open it on word (all versions) it does not open
properly. What can I do?

From what word processor did the document originate?.. formatting is often
lost because, while most word processors can more or less import 'as is',
the different conventions of each program will not allow perfect
transitions..
