I have a mac book pro, recently switched from a PC at work, and I have found that the grammar / spell check feature does not function in the word program. I should say it does not exist, this is not an example of the feature crashing I never witnessed any existance of spell checking.

Do I need to add this feature? I assumedit was part of the program package. (only interested in English language)

Well, when you say "recently" ‹ Have you updated Office since installing it?
I can't tell from your post whether it was pre-installed or whether you
installed it yourself, but either way it was most likely 12.1.0 or 12.0.0
that was installed. Office is now at 12.1.7 so that's the first thing to
check. Go to the Word menu & select About Word to see what level your
installation is at. If it's anything other than 12.1.7 go to the Help menus
& select Check for Updates. [While there you might want to set the
AutoUpdate feature to "Monthly".]

Once Office is fully updated run the Apple program called Disk Utilities
which is in the Applications/Utilities folder. Select your HD, then on the
First Aid page click the button labeled "Repair Disk Permissions". When done
restart your Mac & see if conditions improve.

Spelling & Grammar is as much a part of Mac Office as it is on the PC, so
unless someone fouled up the installation it should be ready to go. The only
immediate difference to be aware of is that the features are primarily
controlled in Mac Office via Word> Preferences rather than the "Options"
you're accustomed to from PC Word's Tools menu.

If you continue to have a problem don't hesitate to come back for
assistance, but please be as specific & detailed with your description of
the situation as you possibly can ‹ "does not exist" really doesn't tell us
very much :)

Well, it exists, and in English it normally works perfectly. Could it be
that you type perfectly? Hmmm... OK then...

Let's first make sure Spelling and Grammar are turned on:

Go to the Word menu, Preferences, Spelling and Grammar...

Make sure that "Check spelling as you type" and "Check grammar as you type"
are both checked ON.

While you're there, make sure the following are turned OFF:

Hide spelling errors in this document

Suggest from main dictionary only

Hide grammatical errors in this document.

Now, we need to check that the TEXT of the document is enabled for spelling
and grammar. We do that by setting the "Language" of the text.

Select some words in the document, then go to Tools>Language>Set Language
and check which language is highlighted. If any language except the dialect
of English you want to use is highlighted, that's your problem. That will
disable spelling in "your" language. The "language" of "No Proofing" or
checking the box "Do not check spelling or grammar" achieve the same thing:
they set the language No Proofing on the selected text, which entirely
disables both the Spelling and Grammar checkers.

Word sets the language of the text word-by-word, particularly in the PC
versions of Word, which auto-sense language. If this becomes all just too
much trouble, select ALL of the text in the document, and set the language
you want to use. Your spelling and grammar will burst back into life...

Mac Word has a new and even more annoying habit: it switches text language
if you switches the "Keyboard". You can (and should!) disable this piece of
stupidity. Go to Word>Preferences>Edit, and switch OFF "Match font with
keyboard".

There! That should get it working... But do all the updates Bob
recommended also...

Cheers
