Hi David,
Corentin, sorry to be a nuisance again but
I am now on my sixth episode of immediate quit on start-up in little
less than 2 weeks. I have used the office uninstall program each time
and this time I was running office straight off the disc spec without
any updates. would this have replaced the fonts?
Nope. Office uses fonts from every possible "legal" location on your
drive. I would suspect that you have corrupted fonts either in:
/Library/Fonts
~/Library/Fonts
/System folder/Fonts
I would also avoid launching Office in the version that comes from the
CD. I'd install all the updates first.
i am rapidly
getting to the stage where the logical thing is to write off word and
look for an alternative. i simply cannot get through to online help
as it won't recognise my id. I have run cron scriptts most days and
disk ermission repair at least daily and frankly it would probably be
quicker to use a manual typewriter given the time I am spending on
dealing with word.
Any final suggestions?
You can either try to disable fonts manually by batch to identify which
one is corrupted and generating these crashes, or use an application
like FontDoctor (in paid or even in demo mode) that will make your life
tremendously easier.

I hope MSn don't invite me to buy the new
version they are releasing as I only bought this one weeks before they
announced the free update programme and their total lack of interest
in this problem and the absence of any support program is not what I
expected when i paid good money for this piece of crap.
As I was saying before, I suspect the problem you have is related to a
corrupted font. I agree to think their app should be more robust in this
regard and simply say "I cannot launch because this font is corrupted on
your drive" but I also admit they have very little control over thrid
party font corruption on your drive (admitting that's the cause of your
problems) :-(
Sorry but this is getting beyond a joke.
I sincerely hope you'll manage to find out what's wrong and get it to
work :-(
