Word quits in Panther

I upgraded to Mac OS 10.3 Panther. Now I am having trouble with MS
Word quitting in Panther. I can get a document to stay open for about
15 seconds before Word quits.

I tried getting a most recent update off MS's Mactopia site, but that
didn't help. I also repaired permissions. The problem persists.
