Word refuses to get out of'word 6.0/95 compatibility options are set' issue

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

When ever i try to save my documents in .doc format and make them compatible with word 200-2004 & X i get "word 6.0/95 compatibility options are set"

When i try to rectify this and select "word 200-2004 & X " in the compatibility preference pane (as suggested by word itself) and then try to save again...i still get the issue. No matter what i do i get that issue and no matter the document i get that issue. If i ignore and save anyway...the repercussion is the document wont render the page correctly when i attempt to open it using office 2004.

Try going into Preferences and locate compatibility. set for the desired
compatibility you desire. 2007/2008
or 97-2004, or 6 -95 or whatever

For me the most ideal ever design was Word 6.01/ Excel 5.01 series I
could do a lot more things than I could with any version after. Except
in 2001 and over Printing envelopes and Labels were finally fixed.

One feature they put back in 2008 that was in hiatus since 6.01a was the
format painter (though it wasn't called that then).

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

Are you saving the files? Or is this happening every time you open a new
file?

If doing the former and it continues then you possibly have a problem
with preferences or the Normal template file.
Cross-pollination between 2004 settings (or other versions on the
computer) and in 2008.

some of the other people here can explain how to correct that.

If your getting the latter, then that is normal unlike the past where
each time a new version came out a converter automatically kicked in and
converted all Office files to the latest version. 2008 doesn't do that.
you have to change on a case by case basis. because in some cases its
possible you will have to send old style files to others, because they
don't own Office2007 or 2008 which is the only applications that use and
save in XML based format.
So you have to convert each time you open a file saved in a previous
format.

The warning is just a irritation. Ignore it. It is warning that you are
saving to a format that can not store everything that Word 2007/8 can make.

Now: Let's work out why the file won't render properly in Word 2004. This
is not the file format, or the "compatibility options" that are causing
that.

There's something in the file that is throwing it off when the file is
down-converted to .doc.

Did you run a Compatibility Report? What was the result?

Cheers

Im doing the former

" Did you run a Compatibility Report? What was the result?"

If you mean office 08 then Yup. Always comes back with 'word 6.0/95 compatibility options are set. If i save the document anyway and attempt to open it in word 2004 some characters get screwed and basically the document fails to render properly. However if i then run a compatibility report on the document within office 2004 it says no issues found.

Go figure

Yeah. Compatibility report in Word 2004 won't find any issues, because the
issues that "were" there are no longer in the file.

Compatibility Report in Word 2008 "should" tell you what, exactly, is
incompatible, and what it is intending to change it to. Often, it simply
notes that you are saving back to the older format, which is the warning you
are seeing.

If the document contains anything that is going to be down-converted as a
result, the Word 2008 compatibility report should tell you what it is and
what it is going to do about it if you proceed.

The characters that are getting screwed: they wouldn't be Small Capitals
would they? There's a known bug that produces wrong characters if some
fonts are set to Small Caps.

If you like, send me a copy of the document to (e-mail address removed) and I will
have a look and see if I can spot it. Plain text email and no URLs, or it
won't make it through the spam filter :)

Hope this helps
