word requesting virus scan

I'm using microsoft word as part of microsoft office xp 2002. Lately, word
has started "requesting virus scan...." everytime I'm opening a document and
it doesn't seem to matter whether I created it or it was an attachement. Can
I somehow turn this feature off,as it takes ages to complete the scan.
Your help is appreciated.

Microsoft Word does not come with a virus scanning function built in, so
you should direct your question to the unnamed maker of your antivirus
software. If you use Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the
Office Plugin that comes with it (but don't disable Norton AutoProtect).
