word reverted to older version

My Microsoft Word program has all of a sudden reverted to an earlier
version and I can't find the right version. The "about Word" gives the
same information as my laptop, which still has the more recent version.
They both say "Microsoft Word X for Mac". But my desktop no longer
has the formatting palette and other new features, and crashes more. I
still have the installation disk. What should I do?

'About Word' is an unreliable test of precise version in Word X. You
are better off using Finder's get info.

I think you have misdiagnosed your problem.
Aside from the "crashes more" there are simpler explanations than a
mysterious non-existent earlier version of Word X leaping into your
machine from another dimension. You are already running the earliest
version of Word for OS X. There are only two major flavours, Word X and
Word 2004.

You would certainly notice if you were running Word 5.1a in the Classic
environment wouldn't you?

Post back with finder's view of Word's version numbers for both
machines.

You have more likely broken your menus and toolbars settings.
Hit View » Toolbars » Customize.. then reset (unless you want to
preserve extensive customizations you have already made in which case
you will have to fettle in there to get your 'new features' back.)

Thanks. When I looked at TOOLBARS, there was something about word 5
toolbars. When I clicked on it, it went away and my more recent
toolbar menu with the formatting palette came back. I guess that was
the problem.

Glad you solved it. That is a famous feature. I thought it was only
2004 that offered Word 5 menus, so I kept quiet. I'll know better next
time.
