Word "Save As" tp floppy freezes machines

I have several Compaq machines, Deskpro EN's Evo D500 & 510 running Windows
2K. Most have Office 2000, some have Office XP. If an Excel file is saved to
floppy, it works with no problem. Word files can be saved to the HDD or thumb
drive. When an attempt is made to save a Word file to floppy, Word stops
responding. Attempting to stop it via the task manager has no result. The
machine has to be turned off, it will not shut down. Needless to say the file
is not saved. Using word's repair function under help will correct the
problem, but then it returns. Anybody experience this or have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Using Word with floppy drives has long been discouraged,
in part because of the way that Word uses temporary work files
at the place where it opens a file and reuses them when saving/
closing a file, so switching floppies can be an issue.

On the Word 2002 copies (Office XP) you can use the setting in
Tools=>Options=>Save
[Make local copy of files on network or removable drives]
to work around the 'owner file lock' temporary file issues, but Word can
produce files larger than a single diskette.

Apparently the Microsoft rollup 1 for win2k SP4 cause the problem. I
un-installed it on a couple of the machines and Word saves fine to their
floppies without rollup 1. I told the affected users to save to the HDD, then
copy the saved file to the floppy with Windows. Thanks for the advice though.
