Word saves all docs as "initial" only - EX: "C.doc"

I'm running Word 97 on Windows XP Home.

When I try to name a document and "Save As", such as
"Family Papers.doc", it is saved as "F.doc", not the name I
entered.

I've renamed "Normal.doc" to "Normal.bad", restarted Word
and had the same problem. What next?
