Word saves documents in Classic!!!!

R

RoseM

I am running MacOS10.4.7 and do not have Classic9 installed on this
computer.
I use WORD 2004, version 11.2

All of a sudden, when I try to save a WORD document, it saves it in
"Classic" application, which of course I can't open....this is a fairly
new development as I have been using WORD 2004 for over a year and a
half with no problems saving.

When I try to save, the "SaveAs" dialogue shows "Save As Word Document"

I've checked my System Preferences for the boot disk (which is
correct); shut down and re-started and still have the problem...

Any ideas?????????
I need HELP!

Thank you
RoseM

Hi Rose,

How do you know it saves it in Classic?

If when you double-click a Word icon, it tries to open in some program you
don't like, then in the Finder, select a Word icon, hit cmd-I for Get Info,
and look at the Open With settings in the Info window. Set the Open With to
your current version of MacWord and click the Change All button.

If that doesn't help, please be sure to explain the symptoms that you are
seeing--that is, tell us how you know it is saving in Classic. What do you
see happening that is problematic?

The key, though, is to make sure that you choose your *current* version of
Word (as Daiya said) when you go to Get Info> Open With. If what you see
selected in the Open With pane says *just* Microsoft Word, then it's not
defaulting properly and is pointing to an older version.

It should say something like "Microsoft Word (default) (11.2.0)". If you're
not sure the right version is selected, then in the Open With pull down
menu, click on "Other" and navigate to your current version of Word.

Also, if you haven't already done so, open Disc Utility and Repair Disk
Permissions. More on that here: <http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DiskIssues.html>

Also, do getinfo on several Word documents at the same time so that the
Change all button becomes alive. Click it and this will make any word
docs open with current version. just doing on just item I have found
just changes that one.

Don't know what the difference is, and don't doubt what you say.

My experience is if I do get getinfo on just one file or even two files,
It only changes the file association for that file or those two files only.

I can even see the icon changes which indicates the file association has
been changed.

However; if I do a group of 4 or 5 or more then all the icons on the
word files change.

This even spills over into other directories. I don't know why this
happens for me. But this is my experience. If Others run into "my"
experience at least they will know what to try.

Makes no difference for me whether I am using X.3.9 on my Desktop Unit.
or whether I am using x.4.7 on my PowerBook 17" machine.

I do find to select multiple files to do get info on X.4.7 you must hold
down control key and click on a group of highlighted files then when
menu pops up you select Getinfo on Multiple files.

Doing as in X.3.9 causes the getinfo windows to open individual windows
like was done in OS 9.
Hi Phillip -

My experience has been different - Any time I use Get Info on a file the
Change All button has activated *if* you change the association. If you
don't make a change the button remains inactive.

I've experienced this a couple of times myself, but sometimes it does work
properly.

The last time it happened I was changing a graphic format (jpeg or tiff,
don't remember) to open in Photoshop Elements instead of GraphicConverter.
The first time I did the Change All, it didn't take; that is, when I
double-clicked on another jpeg, it still opened in GC. After doing the
Change All on that file, however, all future jpegs correctly opened in PE.

This shouldn't be necessary, though. Doing the Change All the first time
*should* work.

No I didn't think you were trying contradict me. Nor was I trying to
contradict.

Both us us were more or less pointing out how things work for us.
Computers can be likened to cars. If we both have the same model cars,
they don't always drive the same or feel the same. Each has their own
quirks.

One thing I've tried to learn to do, is not pick fights. I just explain
how things work for me, so that if someone else should see the same type
of action or reaction on their system, they would know at least one
possible action or reaction to happen. Even their mileage may vary. :)
Hi Phillip -

Please don't think I was contradicting you. It's just that any time I've
gone the 'Get Info' - 'Change All' route it 'seems' to have worked
universally. Then, again, I have seldom had occasion to use the feature, so
perhaps I've just been lucky or maybe haven't noticed that some file
associations didn't get changed.

Re the multiple file thing - If you keep the Control key held down *after*
you've clicked, the menu item reads as 'Get Summary Info' & yields just the
one Info window. OTOH, if you release the Control key the menu item presents
as the standard 'Get Info' & launches Info windows for each selected file.
The Finder menu works the same way... Using the Shift, Option or Control key
while the menu is open produces different choices in many menus.

Likewise, if you Control+Click then press Option the same item will change
to 'Show Inspector' - another variation on the 'Get Info' command. At the
same time, the item that otherwise reads as 'Open With' will read as 'Always
Open With' allowing the association change for the file while opening it.
