Word saving conflict with hp scanjet 5590

J

John

Using OfficePro 2000, after HP scanjet 5590 software is installed, Word locks
up if I try to save a Word file. Word opens, cretaes and prints a new file
OK, it just will not allow "Save" or "Save As" to function.

See: You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165

If you aren't comfortable with editing the Windows registry yourself, then
go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to Item
No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix". Download and run
the script to automatically modify your registry as described in KB918165.
You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program in order to run
the script.

A revised version of the MS06-015 update was released last week that
supposedly interacts better with the older HP and nVidia software. You can
download the revised update from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx.

Some people may suggest that you uninstall the MS06-015 update, or rename
the c:\windows\system32\verclsid.exe file. Doing either of these things
will leave your computer vulnerable to the security issue described at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx. You should
only uninstall these if the revised patch causes the same problems and the
registry edit doesn't help.

For the latest info, see http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/default.aspx.

Thank you Charles. I saw your earlier post on a different thread. It did
install the updated version of MS06-015. It helped some but not enough in
the "saving" function. MSWord still locks up if you try to identifiy a
folder beyhond the first layer to save the doc to. I used System Restore to
go back to a "pre MS06-015" date and turned off the auto-update function.
Obviously not the best solution but the only one that works at this point.

Forgot to mention that also tried the kelly korner fix with same result. Not
real comfortable in modifying Windows registry so guess I will leave it for
the moment. Thanks to those who offered their help.

System restore deleted a number of security patches, not just this one.

Turn the Auto-update function back on. Let Windows update. Then uninstall
the problem update (which is not MS06-015) but 908531. (I was wrong in what
I wrote. 6-015 talks about the problems with 908531 and how to fix them.)
You can uninstall it using the Add/Remove programs Control Panel.

Then change the Auto-update settings to be semi-automatic, to download but
to ask you before installing. Don't let it reinstall this update, but do
keep others coming in.

I would guess that you have some other software, besides the HP stuff, that
is causing problems. Keep an eye on the article (check every week or so) for
further revisions.

If the updated version didn't work, chances are the registry patch won't
either. I think they address the same software. See my other post, though,
for thoughts on restoring the other security fixes that have been issued and
keeping auto-update on.

Thanks. Did as you suggested with some result. In attempting to use the
"save in" function in MSWord, I can use the "up arrow" top select a folder to
save in with no problem. However, if I try to use the "drop down" menu to
select a folder, it locks up but eventually will allow the drop down menu
after "45 seconds" of wait - I actually timed it 3 different times. Once the
drop down menu appears the first time, it allows normal use at normal speed
in that doc file. If I open a new Word doc, the slow process starts all over
again so it is not "learning". Will check back and also try HP chat support
although their recommended solution was the same patch. Thanks again for
your help - I will check back and post if I learn anything new.

Neither the Registry edit nor the updated patch worked for me. I ended up
having to delete hpgs2wnd.exe. I haven't had any issues since.
