Still getting the thing about do I want to save normal etc. Didn't someone

Not sure what you mean. It's a pref. If you don't want to be notified
that normal is being saved, turn off the pref. But I do want to be
notified, since this often a way to detect a macro virus. m.

In Word v. X the prompt to save Normal every single time you quit Word if
you kept it open longer than 5 minutes (which drove me batty) was an
indication that Word had been polling the Entourage Address Book and
re-saving all the contacts as AutoText entries yet again - even if you had
made no changes in the Entourage Address Book. (AutoText entries are saved
into Normal template.) You could get your AutoText entries littered with up
to 9 copies of the damn things: if your Address book had 1000 contacts, that
meant 9000 AutoText entries! You needed a macro (one supplied by John McGhie
here) to delete the entries.

In Word 2004, that bug is gone. You also have the option to exclude contacts
from tooltips and autotext entries. So now "prompt to save Normal" is
working as it should. As Matt says, if you did nothing yourself that
involves changes to Normal, the prompt might indicate an unknown macro
virus. However, in 95% of cases, you probably _have_ done something in this
session of Word that requires a change to Normal (changing Styles, perhaps,
or certain preferences, or any number of other things) and you probably do
want to save. I also like to be alerted. You shouldn't be alerted every
single time you quit (after 5 minutes), however. If that's still happening
try Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoText/ turning ON the checkbox for Exclude
contacts, or turning OFF the checkbox for showing Tooltips, and see if that
does anything.

It's a bit over my head, but I'm going to make notes here, and keep your
guys posted.

Paul:
Just went to auto text, and the exclude contacts box is grayed out.

I also could not find any checkbox for showing tool tips in either
autocorrect or auto text.

I get this every time I close Word, is that normal?

Is normal normal? How normal can you get?

I guess you are new here. This has been a favourite topic over the last
couple of weeks. In fact it is a perennial favourite.

Do you know how to google the group?
start here:
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search
and fill in the obvious fields.
e.g. 'microsoft.public.mac.office.word' into
Return only messages from the newsgroup
and 'save normal' into all of the words...

The shortcut answers are
Entourage contacts polluting your autocorrect
Automatically changing styles to match formatting (turn that off, it is
*evil*)
You have opened a document with a Word macro virus.

There are cures for all of them. Once you get into Word, you will find
yourself disabling oodles of features that don't suit you, changing
keyboard shutcuts, and in the final stages of the disease, writing
macros for what you thought should have been in there from the start.

I got a laugh last time I said this:
Bug ridden pile of bloat - strangely addictive ;-)

Sorry kevs. You'll have to hit Google or hope an expert comes along for
the authoritative reply. I'm still on v.X and I wouldn't use Entourage
if you tortured me with 24 hrs of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In the autocorrect, you might try checking "Preserve styles"
That seems to bring up another annoying dialog whenever you change the
format of a paragraph with a style, but makes the other less frequent.

It is like playing whack-a-mole.

Hi Kevs,

Go to Word/Tools/AutoCorrrect../AutoComplete. There's a specific checkbox
for "Show AutoComplete tip for AutoText, Contacts and Dates". If you check
it, then another option/checkbox undims: "Exclude Contacts".
Thanks Beth:
Cant find auto complete. I see:
Autocorrect, autoformat as you type, auto text, and auto format.

From Word Help ("Turn on or off AutoComplete"):
1. On the Insert menu, point to AutoText, and then click AutoText.
2. Select or clear the Show AutoComplete tip for AutoText, Contacts, and
dates check box.

You can also choose Tools/Autocorrect.../AutoText
