Word should be able to build a bibliography for academic papers.

Word does a reasonable job of citations and table of authoritiees, but I
ofetn write academic papers as do many students, and I would find it useful
to be able to type a reference in text i.e. " Brown (1998) stated that..."
and be able to compile a proper bibliography in the Harvard style, i.e.
making sure that references I use in the text are included in full form in
the bibliography.

It seems to me that "making sure that references I use in the text are
included.." could be done by a macro. This macro could be produced by
a person with reasonable understanding of VBA, suitably motivated by
direct personal need, or the hope of undying fame, or indirectly by
the prospect of feeding the wife and kids one more meal.

The macro could search through the document for items of the form

capital letter, one to 25 characters, open paren, four digits starting
with 1 or 2, close paren

Whenever it found one it would look in the (place that you had
previously designated as) bibliography for an item of the form

the found name, 1 to 100 more characters not including a paragraph
mark, the found date, period, paragraph mark

If it didn't find one it could create one (in the proper alphabetical
position) in the form

the name, 25 asterisks, the date

You could then easily spot the things that needed to be filled in.
