Word should not connect to the network automatically

I updated Office for security patches, now my firewall reports that Microsoft
Word is trying to access the internet at random intervals. (MS Office & Word
2003 11.6502.6408 SP1). I suspect that it is trying to automatically check
for updates, but with all the goofy stuff going on out there, there is no way
I am going to let this program access the internet without my knowledge. I
have looked EVERYWHERE to see how I can turn something off to stop this
behaviour, no luck. I am not about to lower my firewall settings to allow
this program through automatically. I will search for a bit longer, then if
unsucessful, find another alternative.
