Word showing edits that are not part of the document

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Intel We're starting to get track changes documents from clients and when we open them, the document displays insertions and deletions (on Mac) that do not appear if I open on a PC.

The strangest error is showing deletions and uses the author name of the person opening it. None of us did anything but open the document. We tested on three computers and each time the author changed to the name on the system.

Again, I opened on a PC and these do not appear.

Any ideas? This is becoming a problem.

Thanks

I need a bit more detail to be sure: there are several scenarios that would
produce this effect.

What's the setting of Word>Preferences>Security>Remove personal information
from this file on save? If that is turned ON, any changes to the document
will be assigned the name of the current user on open, and the name will be
removed on save.

Does the document contain fields or numbering? If so, those will update and
be shown as changes when the document is opened.

If the document is in .docx format, opening on the PC would not produce a
change, but opening in an older version of Word would update the whole file.

Cheers

Hello,

Thanks for your help. These were your questions:

1) What's the setting of Word>Preferences>Security>Remove personal information from this file on save?

A: No

2) Does the document contain fields or numbering? If so, those will update and
be shown as changes when the document is opened.

A: Yes, I'm just noticing these changes are occurring in the footer with page numbers and dates.

3) If the document is in .docx format, opening on the PC would not produce a
change, but opening in an older version of Word would update the whole file.

A: This is a doc.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

I think you will always get some level of this issue in Word 2004 because it
is two steps behind PC Word. There are widgets PC Word creates that Mac
Word has to "re-write" or "convert" when it opens the documents. If Track
Changes is on, some of these will show up as changes.

There is nothing much you can do about this until Word 2010 comes out on
both platforms: they should be an exact match for each other.

Cheers
