Word shows duplicates of templates - but there are no duplicate fi

When I try to create a new document from a certain folder with templates,
Word shows 20 instances of the template (all instances have the same path),
but when I open the template-folder, I find only 1 physical file with that
name. This also applies to other templates in the same folder (they are also
shown exactly 20 times each from inside Word), but not to templates in other
folders. The template works, so it is not a big problem, the main problem is
all that the other users come to me and ask why we suddenly have so many
templates with the same name.
I tried to create a new folder and move the templates there, but that did
not solve the problem.
I have Word 2003 with servicepack 2.
The folder with the templates is on a Windows 2000 server.
If anyone knows how to get rid of these "false duplicates", I would
appreciate your advice.
