Word shuts down when I amend certain parts

Currently tring to finish my thesis. Word 2000 keeps shutting down when I try
and
amend certain paragragraphs/ headings, etc.

It started with one particular sub-heading, and now seems to be spreading to
other random sections of my work.

Have tried opening on different computers and copying and pasting into new
documents - no change!!

Would really appreciate some help!!
