Word Sloooooow in Panther

P

Paul Golden

After updating to Panther, Word takes at least 2 minutes to open a blank
document (I've turned the Project Gallery off at startup). Opening existing
files is painful too. The little ball just spins and spins. I'm stumped.

Specs:

Panther (10.3) on my G4 Ti PowerBook 1GHZ. No classic support installed. 1
gig ram. Installed 10.1.5 MS Office Update. Am I missing something?

Any suggestions?

Hi Paul,

Have you repaired permissions after the upgrade? I'm running Panther
on a Rev D iMac (333 MHz w/256MB's RAM and a partitioned Swap Disk),
and Word works better for me in Panther than in Jaguar.

Mmm-kay.

Do you have WYSIWYG fonts enabled or disabled? If enabled, disable
them, quit Word and launch it again. Does it make any difference?

I've tracked it down! There were Acrobat plug-in's in the Office/Startup
Items folder (PDFMaker.dot) that were causing the trouble. Once I pulled
them out, Word started up like magic. Thanks for your help!

Hi Paul,

Great! Glad you found it. I was wondering if there was some kind of
conflict there. Big difference, isn't it?!

Of note, the problem on my machine existed before the Panther
upgrade. Jaguar users may experience the same long pauses as a result
of this plug-in.
