Word slow to close, or won't close at all

Hi!
When I've been working on a word document (word 2003) and saving as I go
along, if it's been open for a while, when I go to close or exit, it's very
slow to close and sometimes doesn't close at all and I have to close it from
the task manager. When I do this, it leaves lots of temp files on the
desktop. I'm usually running endonote at the same time, and it never closes
endnote, when the older version did. Any suggestions>
