Word SLOW to open

OK, I have searched and haven't hit a solution yet. I have a user
running Windows XP pro and Office 2000 standard. All of the sudden she
started having problems today opening certain files. Files that she
opened yesterday. All of the files are .doc but were created using the
same template. She can open some just fine but not others. Actually
they will open after about 15 minutes (96k size file). Other files
based off of the same template take 2 seconds to open.

I can open all of the files on my computer (using windows 2000 & office
2000), but they do seem to open a bit slow (maybe 30 seconds).

It doesn't appear that it is maxing out her CPU or memory, but just
takes FOREVER to open.

I have uninstalled office & re-installed. Ran a defrag (it needed it
anyways). Tried opening it as a different user to hopefully narrow it
down to a problem just with her profile, but even logged on as
administrator I get the same result.

These files open just fine in worpad, but Word seems to choke!

Any suggestions where to start other than continuing to search?

Well these problems are usually

corrupt normal.dot
corrupt printer driver
missing base template
full temp folder
bad third party add-in

If the FAQ didn't find one of those helped, burn a fresh image onto the PC.

Would any of these explain the behavior of some files opening fine, but
others not? Seems to me most of the stuff posted that I have read
pertains to ALL files or each time you open word. My user is fine
until she opens specific files.

I think I'll be re-installing that PC next week :-(

Are they all based on the same template?

This problem can also be caused by ACT!8. The preload setting needs to be
changed from -stayrunning to -preload in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
