word spacing problem

Cam

I am using Word for Mac on OSX. As of yesterday, whenever I hit the
return key in a document, I get a huge space between two paragraphs.
If I open an old file this problem is not present. All new files have
this problem. I have had this problem since I copied some text off
the internet onto a blank word document. I have looked through my
formatting options but can not see what the problem is. Any
suggestions?

Thanks.

Cam,

I suspect you have added leading (blank space) before or after your Normal
style (assuming that you aren't into other styles for body text, which most
people only do when they used Word intensively). Depending on how you have
configured your settings, this could have occurred from the text from the
Internet and your Normal template was changed, with or without your
knowledge. Whatever the cause, the fact that it appears in new documents
indicates that the template for new documents has been changed (by you, even
though you may not have been aware of it).

Open a blank new document. If you operate without the paragraph marks
showing, as I do, key Command-8 to show them/it. Then select the paragraph
mark that's visible and key Command-Option-q, followed by Control-Spacebar.
These two commands restore the paragraph's paragraph and font settings
respectively to their defaults. Save the document. Quit Word (not just
minimize). On the way out, you may be asked if you want to save changes to
the Normal template; if so, click "yes".

Open a blank new document; the problem should have disappeared. If not, post
back.

* If anyone is still reading down this far, here's a question: is it time
for you to back up your Normal template and all your Word settings? (This
should be on a medium other than the internal hard drive and, to protect
against theft and fire, stored in a different building.)
