Word Spacing

Hello -

I am having a bit of difficulty making my Microsoft Word behave. I am
currently typing up a document that has a numbered list, like so:

1) Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this
continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a
great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived
and so dedicated can long endure.
2) Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this
continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a
great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived
and so dedicated can long endure.
3) Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this
continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a
great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived
and so dedicated can long endure.
4) Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this
continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a
great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived
and so dedicated can long endure.

....etc.

After each number, there is about a paragraph of writing. Now,
according to the Auto Format settings, the numbers in the numbered list
automatically indent, which is fine. However, I would like a one line
break between each number, which I usually achieved by pressing
Shift+Enter. For some reason today, when I press Shift+Enter, the last
line of the previous number gets spaced out so that the words are
evenly distributed over the entire length of the line. So it now looks
like this:

1) Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this
continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a
great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived
and so dedicated can
long endure.

(I'm not sure if the spacing will be preserved after I post this, but I
hope that you understand what I mean.

What do I have to do to correct this?

Nevermind, I mistakenly did not choose an alignment when initially
creating the document. Thank you for your time.

An alternative to performing the Shift+Enter is to modify the format
of your paragraph so that there is space after. (Format, Paragraph)
Set the Space After to 12pts, if you are using a 12pt font. That way
when you press Enter to start a new number, the paragraph you just
finished will receive a 12pts space between paragraphs.

Turn off justification of your paragraphs.

Consider changing the space-before formatting of your list style.
