Word stalls during File>Save As (or first time save) ~30 sec

Hi
Ive been having trouble since upgrading to 10.4 with Word saves on my
laptop. I dont think any other s'ware is doing this (just dont wanna
make statements that might be wrong!) and all other things continue to
work ok. The usual pause of 0.5sec - 5 secs is fine, and that is still
the norm... but sometimes the delay blows out..... and this delay is
only since upgrading.
Sure I tend to run a lot of apps, and the upgrade to 10.4 was
simultaneous with a 1.5MHz 12" powerbook with 1.25MB RAM (each about 3
times what I had under 10.3)... so the multiple apps issue should not
be a problem, should it?
I am always on a network btw, either home or work, so this is not a
change for me, Ive been using Word 11.1 for a while and I have now
removed EndNote 8 cos it doesnt install properly; otherwise I cant
think of anything else that has changed.

Hi Barnard:

Word 2004 has multiple issues with network file handling under OS 10.4.
Some of those issues are annoying, some have work-arounds, and some are
serious. "Delays" while saving are at the lower end of the irritation
scale. Expect "Won't save at all" along with freezes and crashes.

Apple is promising fixes. Microsoft is promising fixes. We are promising
to get really angry if those fixes do not appear soon.

In MY business, I have delayed upgrading to OS 10.4 and will continue in OS
10.3 until the fixes appear and have been thoroughly tested. I can't afford
to get the problem, since I earn my living in Word.

THanks John - your comments make sense and accord with my own
observations, eg I didnt mention my Excel problems as they are less
frequent for me... Ill now start looking fro workarounds and recording
carefully but I think that the LAN at home (Linux/Appletalk/100MB
switch and Airport) has less problem that the full scale work network.
