Word start-up produces "Dangerously low" error message and hangs

M

Margaret Bartley

I am running Windows ME, which came with Works installed.
I've also installed
Office 2000 sp3, Office 2000 Developer, and VB6. It wasn't
great - I lost my
VBA help files, but I was limping along, until I decided to
install Office XP, in a different
folder.

I decided I didn't want to have XP on my system, because I
didn't want it to be the default file for all my Office
programs. I tried to go the File Type associations, and
repoint to Word 2000, but it didn't work, so I removed XP.

All the Office 2000 apps except Word worked fine - Excel,
Access, PowerPoint,etc.
Word 2000 won't open, it just shows the initial splash
screen with "Word 2000", and sits there.

When I give it the three-finger salute, I get a large white
error message box that
says, "The system is dangerously low on resources. Would
you like to terminate the following application? Microsoft
Word (not responding)"

Sometimes, when I hit "Yes", I get the blue screen of death,
other times nothing happens, and I have to just hit the
power switch to reboot. I can start Excel, etc. It doesn't
matter whether I do the Ctl-Alt-Delete after waiting 10
seconds or 4 hours, I always get that error message.

I then uninstalled Office XP, VB6, Office 2000, Office 2000
developer, and Works. I did the uninstalls from the set-up
disks, and also by running the Add/Remove programs from the
Control Panel. After doing that, I ran the Windows
Installer Clean-up Utility, and WinWash.

I then installed Office 2000 only.

Same results.

Am I hosed?
