Had a panicked call from my mother this morning. She said that Word was
stuck on 500% zoom and that she couldn't change it. I've been busy today and
I've only just got round to taking a look and I have to say I've never seen
anything like it. Basically what happens is this; if you change the zoom
back to 100% it automatically zooms back to 500%. I have spent an hour
fiddling with settings and I can't figure it out! It's a shared system with
two other users (her and my father have limited accounts, and there is an
admin for program installations). I have a TrueImage backup I can use to
restore the system if necessary, but I'd be very interested to know the
cause of the problem!) It only happens under her account (the admin and my
father's are fine). I have scanned for viruses, mal-and-spyware (both
AdAware and Spybot) and the system has been given a clean bill of health.

System Specs
---------------
3200+
512MB (32 shared graphics)
80GB
XP Home SP2 (and all subsequent patches)
Office '03 Standard (with SP1)

Any ideas anyone? She's convinced the computer's possessed!

Try this: To change the default zoom setting or choose a custom zoom
setting for your Word documents, click Zoom on the View menu, and then
under Zoom to, choose a setting or enter a percent in the Percent box.

I hope this has been helpful to you.

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822005 and
look up the registry options utility. There is a setting for the
zoom.
Another option: Detect and Repair.

Another option: Remove and Install.

Thank you all for your suggestions, but you misunderstand me (I think). I
cannot control the zoom - set it to 100% and you can watch it zoom right
back up to 500% before your very eyes. I have tried your suggestions, but it
doesn't work.

I would reinstall and/or D&R but the main Office CD has gone AWOL and I am
awaiting a replacement. As my mother spends 50-75% of her work time at home,
this needs rather urgent fixing.

BTW what W version are u using?

Set View to Print Layout/display (I use Dutch W so maybe it's called
differently) but anyway not Normal, not Web layout, not Overview.
Same maybe achieved by clicking the square looking middle icon just left of the
horizontal scroll bar.
Then set the percentage window top right to Width and see what happens.
It should show 93% and you'd have a nice page surrounded by grey borders, as if
printed.
Worked for me!
