Word Suddenly Opens Slowly

We have a Dell computer, and are currently NOT on line.
(We just moved into a new housing development, so our
internet service is not yet available.) When we first
hooked up the computer at the new house, Word was working
normally. Now it suddenly takes FOREVER to open Word
itself, and it takes forever for individual documents to
open. Can anyone tell me what we might have done to make
this happen? (We're only semi-computer-literate.)
