Word switches language for some reason

I am trying to enter the thorn character þ in word, but when I do so, no
matter if its through Alt+0254, or by changing my keyboard layout, it
switched to Arabic, does not enter the character, and asks if I want to
install Arabic proofing tools. I tried repairing office, but that didn't
work. Do I need to reinstall?

Check in Tools, Languages, Set Languages that your language is set as the
default and that Detect Language Automatically is NOT checked.

Also, disable editing for Arabic if not disabled:
1. On the Windows Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Office Tools,
and then click Microsoft Office Language Settings.
2. On the Enabled Languages tab, deselect the check box next to Arabic. If
it is Office 2003, remove Arabic from the list of Enabled Languages.
