Word..system resources low

T

Tom

Running Windows 98 and office 2000. The problem just
started. When I go to open Word it just
hangs.....ctrl/alt/delete gets me out but I get " The
system is dangerously low on resources, would you like to
terminate the following program Winword?" If I click on
yes I get out but then any other program I attempt to open
says "There is not enough free memory to run this program"
If I then power the system down and boot up, all other
programs then work normally. My system resources are 77%
free with 16gb remaining unused.
Any help out there would be appreciated

Beginning last Sunday I began experiencing exactly the
same problem with Word 2000. I looked through recent posts
to see if others are experiencing the same problem because
I thought it might be a virus. Though there does seem to
be an increase in various problems opening word, yours is
the first post describing exactly the same symptoms I've
been experiencing. The Micrsoft response I received to the
query I posted this morning wasn't helpful.

I have Word 2000 with Windows ME. I am unable to open any
existing word document. Everything else on the computer
runs fine. I can open word, write a new document, print
and save the document with no problem. What I can't do is
open an existing document. When I try and open an existing
document Word freezes completely and I have to shut down
the computer to restart. Sometimes I get a message that
says system resources are low (which they are not). I
looked at troubleshooting steps suggest below but none of
the problems match the problem I am experiencing. I have
not loaded anything new or made any changes to the
computer recently.

Did you work through the troubleshooting steps in the article Suzanne
provided?

Note the section on Normal.dot.

More than likely you have more than one Normal.dot template available
to Word. Search for Normal.dot and rename all those you find to
OldNormal.dot.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

I am also just started getting this error message. I
tried to reinstall MS Word 2000 but am still getting the
error. Were you able to find a solution to this problem?

If you get the answer, Gavin, please let me know. My problem sounds
identical to yours. dcaswell
