word takes 5 minutes to start up how do i speed it up

how can i make my word start up faster. it takes about 5 minutes. all other
office programs open immediately. also when i try to open a document i get
the message "scanning for virus" that takes another 6 or 7 minutes. how do i
turn virus scan off? i have nortons so i'm not worried about viruses.
