Word "terminating in an unusual way"

E

estillbham

For the past week or so, each time I close Word at the end of the day, I get
an error message that the "application has requested termination in an
unusual way." Two days ago, I went through the "reinstall" Office routine,
but that did nothing to help after the first time of closing Word. This
morning I downloaded and installed all the critical updates for Windows (but
I think there were no Office updates). The problem persists.

I use Office XP and Word 2002.

I will appreciate any help anyone can give me.

I had a similar problem until I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat 7 Pro... I think
some of the macros they use with Word are hosing things. Haven't had a
chance to check it out on the Acrobat support forums yet though.

I have had Acrobat 7.0 Pro installed for about a year. This problem only
started a week or so ago.

I will check the Adobe support site just to make sure that the problem is
not reoccurring with a new update.

I've heard that Acrobat has a new macro for Office 2003 that fixes the many
problem. Or alternatively, you can run Add/Remove Programs, select Acrobat
and remove the macros. You can still print to the acrobat printer.

Unfortunately, removing the macros removes a big chunk of the functionality
that I want to use. Even after having uninstalled Acrobat 7 Professional I
can still print to the acrobat printer but I want to be able to create pdfs
with bookmarks, cross references, etc. as real hyperlinks.

OK, Let's get back on track. As I said, I don't think it is Adobe Acrobat
7.0 Pro. But things are getting worse, instead of better.

Because I get a message when closing Word ("changes have been made that
affect the global template Normal.dot. Do you want to accept these
changes?"), I went through the steps of Article 320475 (A run-time error
occurs in Word 2002) when you try to save or close a document). That
required that I consult Article 289506 (How to install and use the
Support.dot template in Word 2002).

I went through all the steps in the Support.dot template. Not only did that
not solve the problem, but things have gotten worse.

Now, everytime I start Word, it asks whether to enable the Palmapp.dot
macros. Where did Palmapp.dot come from? It is installed with the Palm
handheld's software?

Now, whenever I exit from Word, whether I choose Yes or No to the "save
changes to Normal.dot" question, I get an error message that the "application
has terminated in an unusual way."

Since I made all the Support.dot changes (and changed everything back), my
computer hangs when it is closing down. I left it running one night and it
was in the same state the next morning. Of course, if I just shut the
computer off, then restarting it takes about 20-25 minutes to allow a check
of the hard disk. (Can I safely skip that?)

And to add insult to injury, this MS board tells me about 2/3 of the time
that the "page is not available" when I try to search for an answer or just
reply to the comments I have gotten.

Short of uninstalling Office completely and reinstalling it, what can I do
to exorcise these demons?

Thanks for your help.

OK. I'm jumping in here a little late in the day, but please confirm for me
that when you start in Safe Mode, the errors and prompt to save do not
occur. From Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word now starts in its default install condition bypassing
everything else. Does it open and (more importantly) close properly?

It starts and exits without problem.

Well that confirms that Word is OK: it is one of the third party add-ins
that is causing the problems. Start by looking in the Word Startup folder
where third party templates will be fond. Rename them all changing the
extension from x.dot to x.bad. then test Word again. If it is OK now, start
replacing the templates one at a time by changing the extension back to .dot
until you find the culprit.

If it is still giving problems, check in Tools, Options for any AutoXXX
macros such as AutoClose, AutoOpen, AutoExit and rename them all by adding
XXX in front of the name (XXXAutoOpen, for example). Then test Word again.
Is it OK now? Once you have eliminated the problem, start adding the macros
again (by removing the XXX) one at a time until you find the culprit.

Once you have found the problem, go to the support site for the particular
macro or template source and see if there is an update to resolve the
problem.

Palmapp.dot was indeed the problem. Thank you very much.

One related question: what is Normal.dot saving each time I close Word? I
thought it was just a template file. If I open Word and then close it
without doing anything, it still shows a new timestamp.

Again it will be one of the third party templates in Startup: usually it is
Adobe Acrobat.

I have gone through each .dot and .dll that is loaded by Word at startup and
changed its extension so that it will not load. None of them seems to make a
difference whether Word asks me if I want to save the changes to the
Normal.dot template when I exit. These are in situations where I open Word
and then shut it down without doing anything.

The good thing is that Word is no longer "terminating in an unusual way" but
I just want to understand why Normal.dot is being changed.
