Word text substitution

dave

Is there a way in Word, to write something like eg, $XYZ
and later get all the $XYZ's in that document to change to actual text upon
printing (but not in the actual document). A kind of variables substitution.
Eg, Say I write a document referring to "Eric" in several places. later, I like
it to refer to "Joe" in those places. If I can do this, can someone please show
by an example?
Thanks

Hi Dave,

You can use Edit=>Find (ctrl+H) in Word to do a from/to change. If you click on the 'More' button in that dialog you'll see quite a
few check boxes and buttons with options to fine tune your search more and you can use [Replace All] once you have found the correct
text (and you can also use Word's undo icon immediately after a search/replace in case it didn't give you the result you wanted)

Hi,
Yes I could do as you suggest - and maybe I didn't phrase my query too well. But
the thing about that is if I do a substitution - and later want to do a differnt
one, (on the same items), I'm faced with a different set of changes.
Thanks,

Actually that's the exact function of MailMerge. See Word Help and
MailMerge.

Ah yes - that is closer to what I'd like to do. Basically I see it then (Mmerge)
as building a small database that can be substituted into the doc. If later I
want to do a different sub, I edit the database. (not the doc).
Thanks
