word tool bar functions

In word xp- after normal boot up 'cut' 'copy' 'paste' 'undo' and 'redos'were
gray and inopertaive. did 'view'etc to 'customise'. all 'formatting' and
'standard' boxes ticked ( as normal) and functions had gone from gray to bold
on toolbar. But on 'close' bold goes back to gray and inoperative, and I
cannot get them to work. How do I restore functions? Thank you.

Some icons are only active if you have a document open.

Cut and Copy are not enabled unless you have text selected. Paste is not
enabled unless there is something on the Clipboard. Undo and Redo are not
enabled until you have performed some action.
