Word toolbars not retaining added buttons after close and reopen.

Buttons added to toolbars are not on toolbars when Word is reopened again.
Neither repair nor reinstall has solved problem. Problem may have begun when
International character toolbar was installed then removed because the IC bar
kept reappearing in the center of the document pane each time Word was opened
even after it was docked at the top of the screen.

Is Adobe Acrobat 7.0 installed on the computer? If so, the
Acrobat 7.0 Create Adobe PDF toolbar add-in for Word prevents
Word from automatically saving changes to the normal.dot template
(which is where toolbar customizations are stored). Customize
the Word toolbar button again, and click "Shift+File | Save All"
to force Word to save the normal.dot template. Alternatively,
you can prevent the add-in from loading as described in the last
section of
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm , but
you'll lose the PDF toolbar if you do this.

Yes, Acrobat 7.0 is installed. Your advice was correct and solved the
problem. Many thanks for the assistance.
