Be careful with the registry, if you go that route. I
assume you meant you checked the FAQs at the Microsoft web
site and tried the suggestions, in which case you already
renamed Normal.dot and restarted the computer. That would
have been my next choice.

The problem is a registry corruption. Renaming normal.dot will be a
fruitless exercise -
