or no reason I can determine, the top tool bar in WORD (e.g. Home, Insert,
etc.) and all of the accompanied options now disappear when I place my cursor
on the document I am working on. How do I turn off this "disappearing"
feature?

I take it that this isn't just the ribbon being collapsed (try pressing
Ctrl+F1 to see if that helps). If the whole thing is gone, try repairing the
installation. Click Office button > Word Options > Resources and click the
Diagnose button.

That's not a bug, it's a feature! I bet lots of people would like to
make the Ribbon go away when they're not actually looking for a
command.

I can make it smaller, but I can't make it go away.

Or, is hiding the ribbon what doctor_ten has inadvertently done, that
even Jay doesn't know how to undo?

If you right-click on the QAT and choose Minimize the Ribbon, you reduce it
to just tabs. When you click on a tab, that tab will open, but when you
click back in the document, the Ribbon will be minimized again. You can also
minimize or restore by double-clicking on any tab.

grammatim,

If doctor_teri has hidden (minimized) the ribbon, then any of the three methods
will unhide it (Ctrl+F1, or right-click the QAT and uncheck Minimize the Ribbon,
or double-click a tab). That isn't a mystery.

If you reread the original post, though, doctor_teri said that the tabs are also
missing. There is no ordinary method to cause that, which is why I suggested a
repair.

Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate the quick responses! To be
clear, yes the tabs disappeared as well, so I had to do a repair. However, I
was not aware of the Minimize Ribbon feature, so it is good to know...
