Word Turns French

S

Stuart Murphy

We have Office 2000 Pro installed and when we use word,
with the spell-checker on, it refers to the french
dictionary, which we have never asked it to do.
When we change the default settings back to english, it
seems to accept that, but then immediately goes back to
french.
This has only just started happening and yet we have had
word installed for at least a year.

Any ideas ??

Thanks

Stuart

Make sure that English (Whatever) is selected as the default language in
Tools | Language | Set Language and that the language for a given document
is correct (Ctrl+A, then set the language). If you've done all this and Word
still has a French accent, check the settings in Control Panel | Regional
Options: Input Locale, as this is where Word gets its information on the
default language setting.

Hi Stuart

I'm not sure about Office 2000, but 2002 has a setting in Tools > Language >
Set language to 'Automatically detect language'. I've had perfectly ordinary
English addresses being marked as French language when this setting was on.

Good point--and one that I always forget about, since I turned off auto
detection immediately. Word 2000 *does* have this setting, I believe.
