Word underlines both selected and unselected text.

I use Word 2003 and Windows XP, SP2. I recently wrote a document in Word.
When finished, I went back to the top of the first page to insert a title. I
typed the title, selected it, and clicked on the underline button. The
program underlined the whole document! I put a section break between the
title and the rest of the document, but got the same result. Also the same
result when I clicked on the "italics" button.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can explain to me what I did wrong.
