word unexpectedly quits on Network user

Alex Chand

I am using eMac with mac OS X 10.3.4, and using Microsoft word X
release 1. If i open a new blank document, it opens fine. But when I
open the existing doc where I copied from my backup hard drive to my
document folder. It will unexpectedly quits or sometimes it pop up a
small windows saying " enable macro or disable macro" which I never
use macro before.

if i choose enable macro, then the word will quit unexpectedly. Since
then, i won't be able to open the file which it will quit
unexpectedly. Then I have to choose 'disable macro" to open the files
and it opens "read only" permission. AND I have to do is open a new
blank document and drag the file into the blank document and save it.

It also happen to all attachement documents. If i just double click
the file from the attachment, it will quit unexpectedly. Then I drag
the files to the desktop and open it with "disable macro" and open a
new blank document, then drag the files into blank document and save
it.

It only happen when I am in network user, It didn't happen when login
my account from the local hard drive.

any helps will be appreciated. Thanks

Hey Alex,

When you say you log in as a "Network User" does that mean that your home
directories are stored on another server, and not your local computer?

Thanks

Hi Jeffrey,

Yes, You are right. The home directory is stored in xServe. The local
comp only contain Admin Account. All applications are installed in
the local drive.
Thanks for reply.

Word X is not compatible with environments where the Home directory is not
on the startup partition. Word 2004 is however.

I had my Home Directory on another partition for years, using Word X.
(Office was also on yet another partition.) But I've been using a symlink
for the Home Directory, not a regular alias, so maybe that helped. I also
created a symlink to a subfolder called "Applications" in my Home Directory.
(An "Applications" folder in Home Directory is an Apple-approved location
for 3rd-party apps. The symlink worked just as well.)

If i create symlink "Application"subfolder in my home directory, then
Do I need to uninstall the Office that installed in the local HDD?
Thanks

You don't need any links. You can designate your home folder in NetInfo,
and the Office applications can run from any volume, assuming
permissions are set correctly.
