Hi Mark;

Since your versions are up to date the first thing I'd do is run Disk
Utility - Repair Disk Permissions, shut down the Mac [not a Restart], wait
1-2 minutes then power up & see if the problem continues. If it does, reply
with some additional information in order to help pinpoint the problem;

Exactly when does this occur... On launch, while editing, on Save? Give as
much descriptive detail as you can.

Does it happen with all documents - including newly created ones - or does
it happen only in certain ones?

Does it continue to occur if you hold the Shift key while launching Word?
Note: this is a diagnostic measure not a fix :)

If you create a new User Account & run Word while logged in as that user
does the problem occur there as well?

Hi Marc:

In order of likelihood, that could be:

1) Corrupt documents

2) Bad directory permissions

3) A missing update.

In your case, I would first repair permissions, because it's quick and easy.
Run Disk Utility and choose Repair Permissions. Then shut down the computer
and turn the power off. Count to 10, then re-start.

The shutdown triggers some system cleanup tasks.

Sadly, I suspect the real problem is "Corrupt documents". To prove it,
create a fresh new blank document, and ask your kids to type in that. Tell
them NO pasting at all, from anything or anywhere.

An hour should be long enough to prove the case: if Word freezes, we have
not found the problem yet. If it doesn't, the answer is "Corrupt Documents"
and you will need to de-corrupt each one they want to work with.

The first method I would try on a corrupt document is a "Maggie", because it
is quick and easy, and it fixes most things.

The Maggie:

1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

If that's not it, come back, we have lots more things to look at.

Cheers

Sorry Marc, but I can't offer an meaningful "ideas" until you supply the
requested information. Without knowing the results of those troubleshooting
methods we're sniping at ghosts.

The next test is to create a new User on the Mac.

If things work from there, move the data over into the new login (It's a lot
quicker to simply move the data than to try to work out what has gone
wrong...)

If it doesn't work in a new user, things are really screwed and we need to
do some careful analysis to work out what is wrong. If we get too
adventurous we risk losing all of the saved data, so let's work carefully,
huh? :)

Right now is a seriously good time to check that the backup is running
properly and you can see all the files that have been saved ‹ you may be
just about to need it :)

Hope this helps

Hi

I tried opening a new user and Word works fine in the new user. Should
I transfer over all the files and applications and is there an easy
way to do that? Do I assume Word in my user is corrupt and I should
not use it? may it "right" itself after the n ext update comes out?

Thanks

Hi Marc:

No, this proves that the "Preferences" in that user login account (User ID)
are totally pooched, which is why none of the usual fixes work.

If you continue to use the bad user ID, chances are the problem will
continue to get worse, and more problems will appear the longer you use
that.

The best way is simply to move the entire contents of the "Documents" folder
into the new User ID, using Finder while logged in as the new user. (Since
login permissions will prevent you reading from one ID to the other, you
need to move everything to Shared from the bad ID, then move everything from
Shared to Documents using the new ID.

It is important that you do not use Fast User Switching while you do this:
log out from one user then log in as the other, or you may get a whole lot
of nasty errors and exceptions.

Do NOT use any of these "Migrate" or "Move" applications: they tend to
CREATE these kinds of problems. And don't even THINK about copying anything
from Preferences, that's where the problem is...

When you have checked that everything you want has moved successfully, just
delete the old User ID. Don't delete it too quickly, because you may need
some of the passwords stored in its keychain!

Hope this helps

There's no need to transfer any applications -- they aren't specific to any
particular user. Access to programs is typically controlled by rights for
the User Account which allow access to all programs by default.

Also, Word is not corrupt -- if it were you'd have the same problem in the
new account since it is running the same Word application. The problem in
the other account is with the account itself which prevents Word from
operating as it should [and as it *is* in the new user account].

The only thing you need do is move the files created in your other account
into the new one. Typically that's most easily accomplished in Finder by
simply dragging the enclosing folders. You might want to consult Mac Help on
deleting accounts & moving user data. Especially if you use Entourage it
also would be a good idea to follow the suggestions offered here:
