Word vs. Office

Hi. I was debating to either get Word 2003 or Office
2003. Do you really need all the other programs that
Office 2003 comes with? Is Outlook Express 6.0 as good
as Outlook 2003? I guess you really need Office if your
in the corporate world which I am not. I have noticed
some Powerpoint presentations popping up on the web and I
wasn't sure if I need Powerpoint for that. Or maybe I
should even wait until Works 8.0 comes out. I wonder if
Microsoft will finally include some form of the Word word
processor in Works 8.0 and it would active the spell
checker in Outlook Express plus automatically save
documents in the Word format. Thanks.

I'm glad you were able to have such an interesting discussion with your fine
self. Now that the two of you are finished, do you have an actual question
that someone other than you might be able to answer for you?

Cheers,
John

I know what I need, but I don't know what you need; which is what i
presume is what you were asking. (I use full Office Pro ... everthing
in pretty heavy use except for Publisher which I find lacking).

Outlook Express and Outlook (despite sharing part of a name) are two
separate products.

OE is a terrific program, but just does email, newsgroup, and will keep
an address book.

You can search the outlook expresss newsgroups
(http://groups.google.com) to find out how to get spell checking in OE.

Outlook is a full "personal informration manager" and is much more with
a differenet user interface. Email, to-do's, more sophisticated contact
list, journal, notes, calendar, and a host of add-ins that you can buy
to do even more.

You can use PowerPoint to view PPT's made by others and on web, but you
also can use the free PowerPoint viewer available for download at
Microsoft's web site.

There is a pretty useful Word processor in Works now (been there since
the beginning). Not as functional as Word, but it is pretty good and
will do most jobs. You can save Works files as Word DOC files (don't
know if automatic or not, but just do File/Save As and pick Word DOC format.

My hunch based on what you say is that you'll be fine with Works,
Outlook Express, and PowerPoint Viewer to occasionally view a PPT file.
But go ahead and buy more if you want. There are various versions of
Office available with different components. See
http://www.microsoft.com/office.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Yeh, from what you said it sound like I just need Works.
I'm going to wait. I read Works 8.0 is coming out soon.
Maybe they'll fix the O.E. Spell Checker problem in 8.0.
Thanks for the help.
