Word vX Envelope format

Really frustrated with trying to change the formatting of envelopes in
Word vX.

Is there any foolproof way for this old, Word vX challenged rookie, that
works for formatting envelopes?

It is probably simple and I "think" I'm following all the steps in Word
Help but I give up.

I've tried both methods that the little assistant presents and it seems
to take the changes each time. However, when I go back, open that
template document and select envelope, it is back to the default font of
Helvetica.

I'd really like to format all envelopes in the same style, not just for
my three templates that I've created, but I'd settle for success doing
individually. Whatever works.

Thanks. Appreciate.

Well, I'm in 2004 and am not sure what the assistant says that you have
tried, but this should work:
Go to Format | Style, select Envelope Address in the left column, click
Modify. In the next dialog, check ³add to template² but do *not* check
"automatically update." Use the dropdown Format menu at the bottom of the
dialog to access the various options. Click OK.

Repeat for the Envelope Return style. (I personally think the Address
should be larger than the Return, don't know who chose the defaults there).

I don't know that Tools | Envelopes pays attention to what template you are
in when you select it (it sounds like you are expecting it to?). I think all
envelopes may be generated using the Normal template, and the above should
change the default styles in Normal template.

Okay, that didn't work. Turns out that in fact, I was wrong, and Word does
use the template you are in to generate the envelope, not the Normal
template. I think my directions had you change the style in the Normal
template (my directions worked for me, by the way, I changed the default
size). So if you make the same changes (Modify the Envelope Styles) in each
template that you use, it should work. To be sure that you are modifying
the style in the correct template, open up the template and make the style
change as below.

Let me know whether that works.

It has changed the fonts to what I want if I use the "Word Document"
from the Project Gallery but it didn't change the default font for a
template "my letterhead" which I defined as one of my templates.

I tried your method as well as the more "standard way" of launching an
envelope and then changing the Defaults. Won't stick either way. I shows
the change being made but that is it.

I'm beginning to think that perhaps I did something wrong when I defined
the template.
Well, now I'm having difficulties too. Okay, this method just worked for me
(though modifying the style in the template itself did not, as of yet, I'll
have to try again later).

Note: the "Word Document" from the Project Gallery, aka, "New Blank
Document" is the same as a document based on the Normal template, Word's
default template.

Open up your custom template, then open up Tools | Macros> Organizer, and
copy the Envelope styles from the Normal template to your custom template,
which should overwrite the style definition in your custom template with the
style you just defined in the Normal template. Be sure to properly set the
dropdown menus under the panes in the dialog. You can see the style
definition at the bottom to be sure it is the right thing.

Important Note: Changes in style definitions are not retroactive. They
will not take effect until you *generate* a document made *after* the change
(or they will take effect in the document you made them in).

I worked! :)

Thanks very much. Appreciate.

BTW, I after doing it your way I went back and tried again to do it the
Word Help way: opened another of my templates, opened Tools|Envelopes
and then changed the default font. Closed the Envelope dialog and did
not save that envelope it created. Then I closed the open letterhead
document but unlike your way it just closed and did not ask if I wanted
to save the document. Interesting.

Thanks again.

Away, or I would have said this earlier--glad to hear it. Will have to see
if I can get the alternate way working as well.
