Word wants to access internet - Why???

Frequently when launching Word ( and Excel, for that matter), it wants to
access the internet, as evidenced by ZoneAlarm alarming. It appears it may
also be trying to access some remote file(s), as ZA also alerts on antivirus
scanner attempting internet access immediately, while the app is still
opening.
In all cases the destination is my DNS IP.

Also, when copying something from a web page in Intenet Explorer and pasting
the text (usually just a small amount, < 50 characters), Word and Excel want
to access the internet, even though the text is present in local clipboard.
If I disallow the access, the paste operation takes several seconds to
occur. If I allow the access, paste is immediate. When using another
browser,
such as Mozilla, this behavior does not occur.

Can anyone explain this behavior, and provide help in eliminating it?

Hope you get an answer to this. I've inquired before but haven't. I notice
attempts to access the net with Word and Explorer. I don't use Excel or
Access enough to know if they are trying. I noticed this from Zone Alarm
popping up to inform me. I am using Windows 98 and Office 97 Pro.

I first noticed this around Jan-Feb timeframe when there were some changes
related to Verisign certificates of authenticity. I am wondering if the
programs are checking for "certificates of authenticity" or something. I
always refuse the connection and everything runs just fine.

My machine is regularly swept with anti-virus, SpyBot, AdAware, CWShredder
and I think my HighJack this file is OK.

I've never seen wither problem happen on my Win98/Office97 setup. It does
happen on both Win2K and XP with Office 2K.

The 'net access upon program launch is a sporadic thing. The 'net acces for
copy/paste is constant.

I got the same when I first opened each of Office XP Pro's apps. I told
ZA to deny access and to not ask me again.

The same happens to me with IE and Word. I think Word is reading IE's
cache to see what font was used on the web page, then it uses that font.

Pastes from IE into Notepad or Netscape 7 into Word are instantaneous.

There should be a setting in Word or Office or Excel to stop these programs
from attempting internet access on startup of the respective program (that's
when I notice it), without having to resort to a firewall. Anyone know how?
